Lange Q&A: USMLE Step 2 (Lange's Review for the USMLE Step 2) Review

(More customer reviews)Appleton & Lange has serious problems in their proofreading/quality control department or maybe they don't have one at all.
The book has quite a few errors in the answer key and on the explanations (erroneously stating that D is the correct answer instead of A, along with a confusing explanation on why A is the correct answer) These types of errors are extremely frustrating and make the book barely unusable; wrong answers and wrong explanations tend to stick and lead to confusion on test day.
Moreover, these errors have occurred on every A&L book I've used: The A&L Goldberg USMLE Step 2 book and the A&L PANCE review book all suffer from the same flaws.
This is not necessarily a knock on the authors, the questions and explanations are for the most part decent, but the answer key errors are too much to deal with in my honest opinion.
For a real good USMLE question book, get a copy of the NMS USMLE Step 2 2nd or 3rd edition

(More customer reviews)This book was extremely useful for me to study for the boards. It is detailed, yet very clear, with good explanations and tables. It emphasizes on drug use, interactions and adverse effects. Each chapter includes a series of 15-20 relevant questions, and you will find at the end a summary of all key drugs in a few words (very useful for a final review just before the exam). The book also includes 2 board-type examinations of 120 questions each.
However, it requires a time commitment of several weeks to be really useful. Therefore, I will strongly recommend it to study during your school classes and then for review, or for international medical students or graduates who,like me, studied pharmacology years ago and need to review everything.

Pharmacology for the Boards and Wards (Boards and Wards Series) Review

(More customer reviews)I have always been a fan of condensed information. I liked this book because it fits my study style perfectly. The information is presented in outline format. The key words that you need to know for the boards are set out in bold-lettering, and all the drugs are summarized in tables. I have Pharmcards, but I like studying off of tables for memorizing drugs better because it keeps the class of drugs together in my mind, and I can quickly go back to the text if I need information that is not presented in the table.
This book is by no means comprehensive. For example, it doesn't give trade names or dosing schedules that you would need for third year while out on the wards, but it is great for learning all of the drugs for second year--and there are a heck of a lot of drugs to learn. You can buy this book at the beginning of the year and study from it to learn the drugs for each class that you have, and then you can use it again at the end of the year as a quick review when studying for the boards. Pharm is tough--I highly recommend this book.

(More customer reviews)'Blueprints Medicine' is poorly written and poorly illustrated - its organization isn't conducive for learning or reviewing: every organ-system-based section begins with verbose description of the differential diagnoses of symptoms, which is a real chore to read; then follows very scant and superficial presentation for just a few diseases - there are glaring omissions of many very hot topics; don't expect to find detailed explanations of mechanisms of pathophysiology - this book doesn't even provide clear pathophysiologic classifications - resembling but unrelated disorders are blended together in incomprehensible way; 'Blueprints Medicine' is too basic and oversimplified for average medical student, so you'll be wasting a great deal of your time on reading stuff which you already know.
The USMLE Step 2 CK is a difficult exam and its toughest and most heavily tested subject is internal medicine - 'Blueprints Medicine' is absolutely not enough for this exam, as well as for internal medicine clerkship; without any doubt, it's one of the worst of the 'Blueprints' series (together with 'Blueprints Surgery').
Instead of 'Blueprints Medicine', for the same purposes and the same price, I highly recommend 'Step-Up to Medicine' - this gem packed with info tops 'Blueprints Medicine' in every aspect - it's better organized, more readable, more comprehensive and detailed, yet - more concise and high yield; description of pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment is thorough and decent, yet - clear and easily digestible; this is achieved by maximally balanced and efficient use of just 512 pages - only relevant information is presented, without extraneous details; in addition, 'Step-Up to Medicine' is much better illustrated than both 'Blueprints Medicine' and 'First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship' - lots of classic x-rays and ECGs, and the generous use of patient photos; I only suggest adding ample number of USMLE-ish case(vignette)-based MCQs to the next edition.
It's a pity that books for other clinical subjects from 'Step-Up' series aren't still available at this time, though the publisher - Lippincott Williams & Wilkins - advertised their release on the cover of 'Step-Up to Medicine' 2 years ago; maybe this could be explained by the fact that LWW then purchased the rights to publish 'Blueprints' series from Blackwell.
'First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship' is also better than 'Blueprints Medicine', but not as good as 'Step-Up to Medicine' - it's quite readable and well-organized, but too superficial with regard to pathophysiology and weak with regard to treatment and management; many important diseases are barely covered; overall, to the point, but not enough detailed; it would also benefit from case-based MCQs.
So, I'd rate 3 reviews of internal medicine for shelf exam and for the USMLE Step 2 CK in the following order:
'Blueprints Medicine' < 'First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship' < 'Step-Up to Medicine'.
'Step-Up to Medicine' is an irreducible minimum for above mentioned exams - if you think that you need a more detailed resource (in the middle between mini-reference and a big textbook), then get 'Andreoli and Carpenter's Cecil Essentials of Medicine' or 'Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment'.

It has highlighted words inside bullet points that make reading each chapter easy after you have already read the chapter once. The experienced student will find this book to be a quick, concise review that is not bogged down in detail or words. However, there is a down side to moving at this pace. A beginner will feel lost and confused. What looks like a quick review to an advanced reader will become a memorization of bullet points if you don't have a little background to begin with. The questions that are provided are excellent and board worthy. However, they are not found at the end of each chapter. A couple of full length tests are at the end of the book, but you will not be able to practice after finishing a chapter. Online access, which comes with the book for free, does break up the questions a little more, but not into chapters. You really won't be able to practice questions until you have all of the book read, or you will need to filter through questions to find the ones that you can answer (an awful waist of time). Still, if you are trying to decide between BRS and this one, pick this one. You will be happier with the well organized easy to follow outline that isn't bogged down in details, and unfortunately you will find BRS immuno or micro just as difficult for a beginner. Before using this book, I used parham immuno and Microbio made ridiculously simple. It would benefit you to use these books (or at least ridiculously simple) before trying to master this one or in tandom.

(More customer reviews)While I must admit I read this as part of a Health Regulation class, I found the material enlightening and the style/organization to be stellar. This will not give you direct insight into today's regulations, but will provide a historical sense of the evolution of healthcare regulation (or lack thereof). The author's central theme is that most HC prof regs are based in self-regulation and the "bad apple" approach. Although it illuminates some problem areas, I would have liked to learn more about potential solutions to the problem (e.g. regulate quality instead of dysfunction, developing more effective means of self-regulation).

Kaplan EMT-Basic Exam Review

(More customer reviews)As a former EMT-Basic, one of the things I have wanted to do is to replace the EMT manual that I lost years ago.
I was a bit put off by the first 2 review which were both negative. I downloaded the sample to my Kindle and then purchased the book.
Let me address the negative reviews first.
To answer the one that says the book recommends skipping questions which cannot be done since it is a computerized test now.. - The author states that the test will be computerized as of 2005 and has another set of recommendations for the computerized version. In short, the reviewer only read a small sample and did not get to the second part of the subject. The author put a lot of effort into trying to put the test taker at ease about the test. (Too much I think)
The one who said the book would make decent firewood replacement possibly was suffering from ------ as I cannot imagine why they would say such a thing unless they thought the book was about EMT (Elemental Metal Tracing) or something unrelated to training for the 110 hour Emergency Medical Technician basic course.
The review:
Great book. Glad I found it on the Kindle for only $9.95.
Of course the only reason someone would want this book is to review the material like I am doing because if you are taking the EMT course, you are going to have a book. If you are preparing to take the course, then find out what book they are going to use and get THAT book.
If you are NOT planning on taking the course but want to "Play Doctor" or otherwise learn something on your own then this would be a good book, but the Kindle version does not have many pictures and that may be important to you.
You could use this book as a first aid primer, but let me point out that reading an ambulance attendant book does not an ambulance attendant make. Or in other words, after reading this book you are not a paramedic and should not go around looking for people to practice on. You should simply do what any reasonable lay person would do when confronted with the need to administer basic first aid while waiting for the real ambulance.
In order to be an EMT you must actually take the training course and be licensed by your state or county. Cross the line and you could be arrested for practicing medicine without a license. When I was Licensed as an EMT I would stop at accident scenes even driving past roadblocks to help and never got in trouble because I was licensed to put hands on people strange to me and even then simply stopped the bleeding and gave comfort while waiting for the real (on duty) paramedics. Well, There were 2 times that I had to jump in and take charge but you get the point.

The author writes a column on the Studentdoctor website so if you'd like to sample the quality of his writing, I'd recommend checking his articles out there.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this book as my husband and I are about to begin the process of opening our own Plastic Surgery Practice. While I am certain that this is an excellent read for a PhD candidate or a physician with an MBA, it is not for the average or even above average physician looking for advice and information concerning the management of a practice. It is most definitely an extremely in depth and detailed examination of all aspects of medical management. It presupposes that the reader is well-versed in fiscal policy, business law, and graduate level economics. I struggled with the book for several days before making it a gift to my brother-in-law who is an MBA student. At the core it is a textbook for a graduate business student and not for a physician.
