(More customer reviews)I am an avid reader of history books and found Tragedy at Graignes to be one of the best I've read in recent years. This is a well-researched biography written in a way that made the main character, Bud Sophian, come alive. Through personal family letters, written over several decades, the reader gets to know Bud intimately. Bud grew up in the 1920s and 1930s and lived a storybook life. He attended the best schools, and socialized with the rich and famous. Like his father, Bud became a physician, but World War II began before he was able to establish a practice. Bud answered the call to military service and became a medical officer with the 82nd Airborne. Bud parachuted into France during the Normandy invasion and was tragically lost during the first week of battle. The book is a vivid reminder of not only the loss of life but the loss of the great potential Bud and others like him lost to war represent. If you like true stories of courage, duty, and self-sacrifice, this is the book for you!
